In beginnning of 2025, European Union finalized new rules for packaging and packaging waste reduction, which will enter into force on February 11, 2025. The new law, known as the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regualtion (PPWR), aims to reducte plastic waste by intoducting waste reduction targets and requiring all packaging on the EU market to be recyclable and carry recycling labeling.
The organization that mandates laws in Europe regarding recycling a percentage of plastic waste is the European Union (EU). Specifically, the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is the legislation that sets targets for recycled content in plastic packaging, including a 30% recylced content target for certain types of plastic packaging by 2030.
June 2025 - The United Nations just signed an agreement with 175 countries that by the end of the year they have to use 70% of recyled oil in the production of new plastic or they are looking at a 5 year jail term.
